In 2017 Solar Float designed and installed the largest floating solar array in the Netherlands at De Krim Resort

Our unique floating system allows PV panels to be installed on unused areas of water, converting unutilised areas into profitable generators of renewable energy.

The Solar Float system was developed to provide a simple and easy to maintain solution that creates a surplus energy output, and in which the supporting structures are durable for at least 30 years with minimal maintenance.

In contrast to common plastic HDPE systems, our concrete floats do not weather and do not need to be replaced after 8-10 years. This means that the costs over the lifespan of our floating system are lower. In addition, our concrete floats do not release microplastics due to weathering, unlike plastic HDPE systems.

Our proprietary system is built using a concrete support structure, creating a system that allows 25.29% of daylight to pass through the structure, maintaining the health of the water and aquatic life below. The underwater structure integrates into the environment, providing a substrate to which huge masses of mussels can tether.

We install floating PV systems using an east-west facing arrangement instead of the industry standard south-facing orientation. South-facing arrangements create large shadows, resulting in an inefficient use of surface area and reduced return per m2 when compared to an east-west orientation. The east-west orientation also vastly reduces wind loads, which can be the cause of large frequency differences and associated failures that lead to a decrease in system efficiency.

This concrete support structure results in uniquely low maintenance costs; avoiding the maintenance costs of land-based solar systems and energy loss of ‘soiling’ as well as the manual annual cleaning required by floating systems that are made using plastic support structures.

Floating PV systems have increased generating efficiency due to the natural cooling effect of the water below the solar cells.

Very low profile - 40cm high compared to the average floating system height of 1.5m. This low profile height allows for harmonious integration of structures into nature.
